FASTING

The Lenten Fast is a fast of penance.

Our selfdenial is a way of emphasizing our dependence on God. Fasting allows for only (1) full meal taken during the day. (2) small meals are permitted, if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs. Eating solid foods not permitted ABSTINENCE is the practice of refraining from Meat and Meat Products.
Fasting and abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday.
Fridays during Lent are marked by the discipline of abstinence from meat.

During the season of Lent we are to abstain from meat on all Fridays of Lent and Ash Wednesday. Meat is considered coming from any animal with hooves: cow, pig, lamb, deer, moose and elk; it also includes rabbit and squirrel. Abstinence from meat also includes animals with wings: chicken, turkey, duck, goose, pigeon and dove. We are permitted to eat fish and all other creatures that live only in the water in order to survive.
